WILKES, BARRE, PA - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team split a pair of dual meets at Wilkes University's John Reese Duals on Saturday. The Blue Jays opened with a 26-15 victory over Oneonta State before falling to host and 15th-ranked Wilkes, 28-6. Johns Hopkins moves its record to 2-3 on the year with the split today.
Hopkins won four of the first five bouts to jump out to a 17-3 lead over Oneonta before the Red Dragons closed with three wins in the final five bouts to account for the 26-15 final score.
Junior 125 Paul Bewak scored a second-period pin of Dominic DeGraba and seniors Ray Yagloski (133) and Henry Stauber (149) added major decisions to help stake JHU to the early lead. An 11-10 victory for Christian Ostrowski at 174 and a first period pin by Kyle Spangler at 184 put the match away for JHU.
Bewak added a 6-5 victory over Gusseppe Rea to open the match against Wilkes, but the Colonels took the next four bouts to jump to a 13-3 lead before Welles Sakmar took an 11-5 victory against Phil Racciato at 165 to make it 13-6. That would be as close as the Blue Jays would get as Wilkes won the final four bouts and capped the victory with a pin at 285.
