SWARTHMORE, PA - Senior Fatu Conteh finished with 19 points and 7 rebounds as Hopkins won its fifth consecutive Centennial Conference game 72-61 Thursday evening. The Blue Jays dominated the boards, outrebounding the Garnet 53-22 and went 19-27 from the free throw line to seal the victory. JHU now moves to 5-2 on the season (5-0 CC) while Swarthmore drops to 3-4 (0-4).
After opening the second half with a 36-35 lead, Hopkins went down for the first time all night after a layup from Elle Larsen gave Swarthmore a two point advantage at the 18:45 mark. Both teams went cold in the early goings of the second half, and Hopkins went almost eight minutes without a field goal at one stretch. Sophomore Liz Tommasi broke the dry spell for the Blue Jays, hitting a jumper at the 12:24 mark to bring her team within one.
The Jays regained the lead at the 11:17 mark, after a steal from Conteh resulted in an easy layup at the other end to put Hopkins up 44-43. The Jays never looked back, slowly building a lead from that point on with a combination of strong defense and second chance points in the paint.
The Blue Jays were efficient off the opening tip, getting out to a 20-10 lead in the first six minutes. The Garnet began to challenge Hopkins with a relentless half court press, and were able to make buckets off of turnovers. After leading by as much as 14 at the 8:20 mark, Swarthmore fought its way back into the game with a 19-6 run to end the half.
Larsen had a game-high 22 points for Swarthmore, while teammate Katie Lytle chipped in 19. Hopkins will have a quick turnaround, with a game vs. Muhlenberg slated for 12 noon this Saturday, December 7.
