Johns Hopkins Goes 4-0 at MACFA Round Robin

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team swept all four of its matches at the MACFA Round Robin at home on Sunday. Hopkins improved to 17-8 with wins over Rutgers (24-3), Drew (16-11), Cornell (16-11) and Lafayette (23-4). Freshman Mark Zimmermann paced the Blue Jays with 11 wins in the Epee.

Hopkins opened against Rutgers and swept all three weapons en route to the team win. Sophomore Paul Vitale and freshman Justin Oh each went 3-0 to lead JHU to an 8-1 win in the Sabre. Hopkins won the Foil, 7-2, as the Scarlet Knights fielded just one fencer in the weapon. Zimmermann and classmates Andy Huang and Brent Schottenfeld led the Jays to a 9-0 win in the Epee.

Hopkins won the Sabre (7-2) and Epee (5-4) against Drew but dropped a close decision in the Foil (5-4). Senior Nicolas Barbera won all three of his bouts to lead the Jays in the Sabre, while freshman Glenn Balbus went 2-1 in the Foil. In the Epee, Zimmermann and Huang each won two bouts with Huang clinching the win in the final bout.

JHU lost the Sabre by a narrow 5-4 score, but claimed wins in the Foil (7-2) and the Epee (5-4) to win the overall match. Freshman Josiah Yiu won two of his three bouts in the Sabre and in the Foil, it was Balbus and freshman John Petrie leading the way with two wins apiece. Zimmermann led Hopkins in the Epee by winning all three of his bouts, including clinching the win in the ninth bout.

Hopkins closed out the day against Lafayette, losing just three bouts on the way to the win. Freshman Lance Shen-Kinney led JHU to a 7-2 win in the Sabre with a 3-0 round. The Foil saw Balbus and junior Evan Stafford combined for four wins as Hopkins won 8-1. And in the Epee, Zimmermann and Huang each won three bouts to lead the Blue Jays to an 8-1 win.

Zimmermann went 11-1 on the day to improve to 58-26 in his rookie season. Huang racked up nine wins in 12 bouts and is now 38-34 this season. In the Foil, Balbus led the Jays with six wins to move to 40-21 this season. While freshman Jonathan Mui went 5-0 and is now 16-7 overall. Vitale led the Sabre squad with six wins to improve to 32-27 this season and 78-65 for his career. Oh and Shen-Kinney totaled five wins apiece, improving to 9-3 and 8-4, respectively.
