COLLEGEVILLE, PA - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team split a pair of Centennial Conference duals at Ursinus on Saturday as the Blue Jays topped Stevens, 25-11, before falling to the host Bears, 25-9. The Blue Jays' record now stands as 5-10 overall and 3-2 in the Centennial.
The Blue Jays used a quick start and a strong finish to grab the win over the Ducks as they won the first three and last three bouts to secure the victory. Hopkins led 13-0 after senior Paul Marcello's 14-6 major decision victory over Ron Ranalli at 141, but the Ducks sliced the deficit to 16-11 after back-to-back wins by major from Joey Favia (165) and Zach Bass (174).
Hopkins then got a 9-5 win by freshman Kyle Spangler at 184 and Evan Johnson and Joey Tilson closed the match with victories by decision to account for the final scoring. Tilson's dramatic 4-3 win over Chris Moyer came in quadruple overtime.
The featured bout of the Johns Hopkins-Ursinus match came at 125, where JHU sophomore Paul Bewak edged Chris Donaldson, 3-0, in a rematch of last season's Centennial Conference title match, which Bewak won with a third-period pin.
The Blue Jays led 7-6 after Marcello, the reigning Centennial Conference Champion at 141, scored a 12-4 major decision over Elisha Gaylor, who placed third at the CC Championships at 141 a year ago, but Ursinus took the lead for good with back-to-back wins by decision from Curtis Watkins and Richard Jasinski at 149 and 157, respectively. Christian Ostrowski scored JHU's final win with a 5-3 decision of Bill Rieck at 165 before the Bears secured the victory with wins in the final four matches, all of which came by decision.
