BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team finally got a chance to wrestle at home this season and the Blue Jays thrilled a large crowd at Goldfarb Gymnasium with a 20-19 upset of 16th-ranked Messiah Friday evening. The win improves JHU's record to 6-10 and marks the eighth match of the year for Johns Hopkins against a team currently ranked in the NWCA top 30. The win is also the first for Johns Hopkins against a nationally ranked team since January 9, 2010, when the Blue Jays topped 30th-ranked Oneonta, 25-13.
The Blue Jays jumped out to a commanding 20-0 lead after the first five bouts to take control of the match. Sophomore Paul Bewak, currently ranked second in the nation, scored an 18-1 technical fall victory over Kurt Rodriguez at 125 to get the Blue Jays going. Bewak led 13-1 at the end of the first period on the strength of a two takedowns and three, three-point near falls before securing his technical fall just 31 seconds into the second period.
Junior Ray Yagloski then picked up a thrilling 6-4 come-from behind win at 133 as he erased a 4-2 deficit entering the final period. Starting on the bottom in the last period, he scored an escape and takedown before getting an additional point on riding time to take the two-point win.
Senior Paul Marcello won by injury default at 141 over Kaleb Loht, who entered the match ranked fifth nationally, and junior Henry Stauber and sophomore Christian Salera picked up gutty two-point wins at 149 and 157, respectively, to build the 20-point lead.
Messiah hopped back in the match with wins by decision at 165 and 174 and a Josh Thompson major at 184 over Kyle Spangler made it 20-10 with two matches remaining. The Falcons would pick up wins at 197 and 285, but senior Travis Ebersole needed more than the 3-1 overtime victory against sophomore Evan Johnson at 197 to give Messiah a chance to win or tie the match entering the final bout. Messiah's Charles Jones scored a second-period pin over Joey Tilson at 285 to close out the match.
