800 Free Relay Claims NCAA Championship in Come-Back Fashion

SAN ANTONIO, TX - The Johns Hopkins women's swimming team ended the third night of the NCAA Championship on a winning note as the 800 Free Relay team won gold. The Blue Jays picked up 61.5 points on day three and now sit in fifth place with 209.5 total points. Emory maintains its hold on the top spot with 428.5 points, followed by Kenyon (375), Denison (281) and Williams (254) to round out the top four.

Freshman Sean McGrath kicked off the night with a fifth place finish in the consolation final of the 100 Back, for 13th place overall. She touched in 56.50 and earns Honorable Mention All-America honors. Junior Taylor Kitayama then claimed bronze in the championship final, finishing in 54.57 to earn First Team All-America honors. Her prelim time of 54.36 is a school record, as she shaved 0.49 seconds off her own program record. It is Hopkins' first medal in the event since Krissy Brinsley took silver in 2002.

Sophomore Maggie Storm finished in a tie for seventh place in the consolation final of the 100 Breast. She clocked in at 1:05.32 to tie for 15th place overall and earn Honorable Mention All-America honors. Her prelim time of 1:05.17 is the fifth fastest in program history, while her finals time is the seventh fastest.

Hopkins then thrilled the crowd with a come-from-behind win in the 800 Free Relay in the final event of the night on the women's side. The Blue Jays, who had posted the fastest time in the nation in the event this season, was in third place when sophomore Ana Bogdanovski went into the water for the final leg. Bogdanovski turned in a 1:47.42 split to push her team from bronze to gold. Hopkins ended up winning by 1.70 seconds to claim its first-ever NCAA relay title. The Blue Jays also shaved 4.74 seconds off their school record of 7:23.88. It is Hopkins' first NCAA title in any event since Rocio Lopez won the 100 Fly in 1996 and just the third ever.

The NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships concludes at the Conroe ISD Natatorium on Saturday, March 23. Day four begins at 10:00 am CST with time trials for the 100 Free. Finals are set to begin at 6:00 pm CST. Live results are available here and live video here.
