SPRINGFIELD, OH - The Hopkins volleyball season got off to a tough start, as the team was defeated in straight sets by No. 7 Emory (25-20, 25-16, 25-16) and No. 1 St. Thomas (25-21, 25-20, 25-17) on Saturday. Hopkins now falls to 0-3 on the season, after losing to No. 3 Wittenberg on Friday night in its first match of the Wittenberg National Invite.
Hopkins came close in the first set vs. Emory, but could not keep pace with the Eagles who went on to win 25-20. Despite the loss, junior Meagan Donohoe posted 13 kills and a block, While Mariel Metalios and Carolyn Zin combined for 21 assists.
Hopkins then went up against the defending NCAA Champion St. Thomas team, and kept the first two sets of the match close, losing by four in the first and five in the second. The No. 1 Tommies proved to be too much, as they posted an efficient .342 hitting percentage to take the third set 25-17.
The Blue Jays gained key experience at the preseason tournament, facing some of the toughest competition they may see all year. The team will be back in action at Goldfarb Gym for the Greg Giovanazzi Memorial Tournament starting September 6. Hopkins has matches slated against Goucher and Cabrini on Friday, in addition to matches versus Lynchburg and Stevenson on Saturday September 7.
