BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's volleyball team went 1-1 in its final two games at the Greg "Gio" Giovanazzi Memorial Tournament Sunday afternoon. All-tournament selection Meagan Donohoe lead the way in the team's 3-0 victory against Lynchburg (25-10, 26-24, 25-18) posting 15 kills, three aces, and a .200 hitting percentage. Hopkins could not find a rhythm against Stevenson, falling in straight sets to the Mustangs 3-0 (25-10, 26-24, 25-16), who remain undefeated this season.
Hopkins got off to a hot start against Lynchburg in the team's first match up of the day, with junior middle hitter Ellen Rogers serving eight straight points for the Blue Jays to take a 14-4 lead. Hopkins held a comfortable advantage for the rest of the set before winning 25-10.
The Jays went down early in the second set, and were trailing by as much as 15-6 to the Hornets. Hopkins continued to hang around, chipping away at the lead until Lynchburg was serving 24-21. Hopkins rallied to score five straight points and complete the comeback with a 26-24 win on the shoulders of Meagan Donohoe's eight kills and Mariel Metalios' seven assists. Lynchburg never really threatened in the third set, and the Jays cruised to a 25-18 win to claim their third victory of the weekend.
Hopkins was in a hole early against Stevenson in the tournament's closing match, trailing 14-3 after the Mustangs served nine straight points. Stevenson went on to win 25-10, but Hopkins had a key opportunity to even the match in the second set. The Blue Jays built a steady lead, and were ahead 20-14 with Donohoe and setter Mariel Metalios linking up for multiple points. Stevenson was able to fight their way back into it, tying the set at 23-23 before securing the 26-24 win. The Mustangs went on to win the third set 25-16, and claimed the tournament title with the victory.
The Blue Jays now sit at 3-4, with their next match-up against Salisbury slated for September 10.
