PITTSBURGH, PA - Hopkins scored three unanswered goals to overcome a 2-0 deficit, topping Carnegie Mellon 3-2 in the final game of the 2013 DoubleTree Tartan Cup. Pamela Vranis scored the game winner in the 56th minute on a penalty kick, and junior Hannah Kronick and senior Christina Convey added goals in the first half to earn the victory.
With the game tied 2-2, Hopkins earned a penalty in the second half after a collision in the box. Senior midfielder Pamela Vranis got the nod to take the shot, and beat the Carnegie Mellon keeper to put Hopkins ahead 3-2. The Tartans only managed three shots after the goal, and the Jays held on down the stretch to win their second game of the weekend.
The opening half saw a flurry of goals with both teams scoring two in the first 30 minutes. Carnegie Melon was the first to strike, scoring two consecutive goals in the 18th and 24th minutes to take an early 2-0 lead. The Blue Jays responded quickly, with goals from junior Hannah Kronick ('26) and senior Christina Convey ('31) to even the score 2-2.
Down 2-0, Kronick was the first to strike for the Blue Jays, collecting a ball in the in the box and burying a low driven shot in the 26th minute to put Hopkins on the board. Five minutes later, Hopkins capitalized on an opportunity after the Tartans' keeper misjudged a free ball that bounced over a defender. Convey took advantage on the scoring chance, and touched the ball into the open net to tie the game.
Hopkins has now defeated two opponents nationally ranked in the top five in a span of five days, and improves to 5-0 on the season. The Blue Jays will return to Homewood Field on September 11 to face local rival Stevenson at 7 pm.
