NEW YORK, NY - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team picked up Centennial Conference victories against Washington & Lee (33-10) and NYU (22-15) and also topped host Hunter (31-18) in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon. The three wins improve the Blue Jays' record to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference.
The Blue Jays opened against W&L and won the first six bouts to jump out to a 30-0 lead before the General won three of the final four matches to account for the 33-10 final score.
Johns Hopkins then took on NYU in the featured match of the day and came away with the impressive seven-point victory. Fourth-ranked Paul Bewak opened with a first-period pin at 125 and senior Ray Yagloski added a major decision to stake JHU to a quick 10-0 lead.
Senior Henry Stauber, currently ranked 10th in the nation at 141, then took on second-ranked Brandon Jones of NYU. Stauber struck first with a takedown in the first period, but Jones knotted the match with a reversal and eventually pushed out to a 6-2 lead before Stauber added a third-period takedown to pull within 6-4. Stauber worked from the top, but couldn't turn Jones and fell by the 6-4 score.
Bewak, Stauber and senior 149 Duncan Crystal helped stake the Blue Jays to a 13-6 lead against Hunter and the Blue Jays later got three wins by forfeit to fuel the 13-point victory against the Hawks.
Bewak and Crystal both went 3-0 on the day to lead the way for Johns Hopkins. Bewak improved to 23-1 on the year and 87-16, while Crystal has now won five straight and seven of his last eight to improve to 10-4 this season.
Yagloski, Welles Sakmar (165), Jared Forman (174) and Kyle Spangler (184) all picked up a pair of victories for the Blue Jays.
