WESTMINSTER, MD - Junior Steph Perez scored a season-high 24 points, as the Green Terror went on to hand Hopkins its second straight defeat Tuesday evening, 70-41. The Blue Jays were scoreless from beyond the arc for the first time since falling to Messiah College on November 30, and were held to their lowest scoring total all season. The Green Terror were firing on all cylinders finishing 48.1% from the field and 8-16 from three-point range. Hopkins drops to 12-5 with the loss and 10-2 in the Centennial, while McDaniel improves to 13-4 and 8-3 in the conference.
The Blue Jays got in trouble early in the first half after scoring the game's first bucket at the 17:58 mark. McDaniel went on a 15-0 run; the largest surrendered by Hopkins all season, to take a commanding first half lead. Senior Fatu Conteh finally ended the nine-minute scoring drought for the Jays with 8:33 to play on a layup, but the Green Terror would continue to build their lead from then on.
A combination of error ridden play and poor shooting doomed the Blue Jays in the first half, as they were held to 4-20 shooting from the field. The team's 17 turnovers in the game's opening half was greater than their team total in seven games this season, as the they trailed 33-13 heading into the locker room.
Hopkins went to work trying to erase the deficit at the start of the second, and made decent headway with 9:58 remaining. The Blue Jays benefitted from a 6-0 scoring run after sophomore Liz Tommasi and Conteh combined for three straight layups, cutting the McDaniel lead to 11. The run didn't last long, as the Green Terror reignited down the stretch and continued to sink shots to fend off the Hopkins comeback.
Conteh finished with a team-high 19 points, her highest total since December 5. The Blue Jays will try to regroup this Thursday as the team hosts Swarthmore at Goldfarb Gym. When the teams met earlier this season, Hopkins earned a 72-61 road victory to go up 6-0 in the Centennial Conference.
