BALTIMORE, MD - Junior Kenny DeStefano scored a pair of goals to lead the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over visiting Gettysburg in Centennial Conference action Wednesday night. The Blue Jays win their second straight and improve to 6-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the conference. The Bullets see their five-game unbeaten streak snapped as they fall to 7-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the CC.
DeStefano put the Blue Jays on the board in the 39th minute as the home team cashed in on a corner kick. Junior Eric Buck sent the kick to the far post, where classmate Ian Heinrich flicked it back towards the center of the goal mouth and DeStefano one-touched it past a Bullet defender for the go-ahead goal. Hopkins took that lead into the half but it didn't take long in the second to get an insurance goal. Senior Rob Heuler played a ball to DeStefano about 20 yards from goal. He trapped the ball, turned and fired a hard shot that just slipped inside the right post in the 49th minute.
Hopkins continued to pressure the Gettysburg defense and sophomore Samy Ramadane would push the lead to three in the 88th minute. Junior Kevin Caskey took a long throw in for the Blue Jays, sending the ball into the box from the right touchline. Freshman Drew Collins headed it wide left and Ramadane slotted it home for his third goal in two games.
Senior Nick Cerrone stopped all four shots he faced to earn the shutout, the 19th of his career. Max Karen took the loss for Gettysburg and made three saves. Hopkins outshot Gettysburg, 14-8, though the Bullets had nine corners to just three for the Blue Jays.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 4 as the Blue Jays host the Dickinson Red Devils. Game time is slated for 5:00 pm at Homewood Field.
