Blue Jays Dominate Visiting Red Devils in Straight Sets

Box Score Oct. 22, 2014

Final Stats

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball got up early and never looked back, rolling to an easy 3-0 win over visiting Dickinson College. The Blue Jays used a tremendous service game to control possession throughout the entirety of the match.

The first set saw the Jays (14-10, 5-2 CC) get out to a quick 8-2 lead, with four players tallying kills in the early going. But Dickinson (5-13, 1-7 CC) fought back to make it 9-7 before the Jays stepped on the gas and pushed the lead to 20-12. From there, kills by Liz Wuerstle and Ali Cox combined with some self-inflicted errors by the Red Devils led the Jays to an easy 25-16.

The second set was dominated by reigning Centennial Conference Player of the Week, Erica Johnston. With the Jays up 12-6, Johnston stepped up to serve. From there, the Palo Alto native rattled off nine aces in a 12-0 Blue Jay run, bringing the score to 24-6, before a Hopkins hitting error ended the onslaught. A kill by Wuerstle ended the set 25-7.

The third set was close throughout the early going, before the Blue Jays forced some separation at 14-12. From there Ali Cox rattled off four aces in the next five points, before Ally Hirsch's back-to-back kills and Carolyn Zin's dump shot brought the lead to 22-12. Following a Red Devils blocking error, the visitors got a kill of their own, but it was too little too late as back-to-back errors proved to be the downfall for the visitors and the set ended 25-14.

For the match the Blue Jays hit .360 and tallied 16 service aces. Freshman Mereze Visagie and Hirsch each led the way on the offensive end with nine kills apiece, while Anne Cohen, Stephanie Yokoyama, Kristi Rhead and Johnston each notched six digs on the night. Visagie also hit a scintillating .615 for the match, dominating up-front with her size and athleticism.

The Red Devils were led by, Emily Smith's five kills, Jenn Morrissey's 13 assists and Arielle Misrok's 14 digs. Unable to string together any type of momentum all night, the visitors hit just .015.

The Blue Jays are next in action on Saturday as they travel to Bryn Mawr. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
