BALTIMORE, MD - Visiting Dickinson scored with just 20 seconds remaining to pull out a 1-0 win over Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference men's soccer action Saturday night at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays slip to 6-3-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the CC while the Red Devils improve to 8-2-1 on the season and 4-0-0 in the conference.
The fans were treated to a lot of up and down action throughout the game, fitting for two teams with a combined 13 wins in the top three of the league standings. As the minutes ticked away it looked like just one goal would do it. Junior Kenny DeStefano nearly got that goal in the 77th minute with a well-struck ball. He collected a ball from junior Josh Hong and fired a shot from 15 yards out that was headed for the far post, but a diving Reed Milbrath knocked it out to keep the game scoreless.
Both teams continued to battle and Dickinson got its chance in the 90th minute after earning a corner kick. Lucas Masiado played the corner into the box, but it was punched out by senior goalie Nick Cerrone. The ball ended up on the foot of Matthew Edmonds, who settled it near the top of the box and then lobbed the ball to the far post, where Will Bracken headed it home.
Cerrone finished with a pair of saves in the loss while Milbraith made five to earn the shutout. Hopkins outshot Dickinson, 9-8, while corners were even at four apiece.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 8 as the Blue Jays step out of conference play and travel to Harrisonburg, VA to take on the Eastern Mennonite Royals. Game time is slated for 7:00 pm.
