BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's swim team opened its season with wins over host Loyola and Boston College Saturday at the Thomas Murphy Invitational. The Blue Jays, who won seven of 13 events on the second day of the invitational, beat the Greyhounds, 240-124, and the Eagles, 207-157.
The Blue Jays opened day two of the invitational with second and fourth place finishes in the 200 Free Relay. Senior Greg Kogut, sophomores Evan Holder and Jeremy Bauchwitz, and freshman Michael Ashmead finished in 1:25.93 for second. Senior Aaron Katrikh and freshmen Austin Wilson, Andrew Gibson and Luke Johnson placed fourth with a time of 1:28.18. Hopkins then claimed first, second and fourth in the 400 IM. Freshman Kyle Otazu claimed first in 4:12.72, followed by sophomore Patrick Flynn in 4:16.64 and junior Billy Gravley in 4:19.90.
Kogut and Wilson followed with a one-two sweep of the 100 Fly. Kogut grabbed the win as he touched in 51.29, while Wilson placed second in 52.27. Sophomore Andrew Greenhalgh then won the 200 Free, beating the field to the wall in 1:43.09 and winning by nearly one second. Senior Dylan Davis won the 100 Back, clocking in with a time of 52.47. Greenhalgh followed with his second win of the day, taking the 1650 Free by more than a minute. He won in 15:40.16 - the eighth fastest time in program history. Gravley claimed fourth place with a time of 17:00.18.
The 200 Medley Relay saw Hopkins place second as Davis, Wilson, Kogut and Bauchwitz turned in a time of 1:35.41. Davis then placed second in the 200 Back, finishing in 1:54.90. Gibson followed in third place with a time of 1:55.30. Holder took second place in the 100 Free as he finished in 47.13. Sophomore Scott Sterrett and freshman Colburn Yu then went two-three in the 200 Breast. Sterrett touched in 2:11.62 followed by Yu in 2:13.99.
Hopkins then claimed the top two spots in the 200 Fly, led by Otazu with his second win of the day. He touched first in 1:55.26, followed by Wilson in 1:57.25. The Blue Jays closed out the night with first and fourth place finishes in the 400 Free Relay. The team of Kogut, Bauchwitz, senior Ryan Cunningham and Holder won in 3:09.23. Taking fourth place were Johnson, Gibson, Katrikh and Ashmead in 3:14.55.
Hopkins returns to the pool on Saturday, November 15 as the Blue Jays host the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. The Jays' home opener is slated for a 12:00 pm start.
