Johns Hopkins Opens with Wins over Loyola and Boston College

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's swim team won nine of 13 swimming events to defeat host Loyola and Boston College at the Thomas Murphy Invitational Saturday. The Blue Jays beat the Greyhounds, 201-163, and the Eagles, 233-131, to open the season with a pair of wins.

Hopkins opened the day with a second-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of freshman Anna Wisniewski, senior Hannah Benn, senior Ana Bogdanovski and freshman Lena DiPrizito finished in 1:38.78, missing first place by just three-hundredths of a second. Wisniewski then won the 400 IM as she touched in 4:35.15 to win by more than four seconds. Sophomores Shirley Chan and Abby Brown followed with second and fourth-place finishes in the 100 Fly. Chan clocked in at 58.78 while Brown finished in 1:00.13.

Bogdanovski picked up her first win of the day in the 200 Free, beating the field with a time of 1:53.45. Benn then won the 100 Back, beating Loyola's Liz McKenna by less than two-tenths of a second with a time of 59.81. A pair of Blue Jay freshmen then grabbed first and second in the 100 Breast. Gwynnie LaMastra earned her first win of the day as she finished in 1:07.22. Kaitlin Jones followed in 1:07.85 for second place.

Freshman Courtney Cowan continued the Jays' winning ways as she claimed first in the 1650 Free, winning with a time of 17:56.38. Hopkins then picked up first and third place in the 200 Medley Relay to add to its point total. Benn, LaMastra, Chan and Wisniewski combined for a winning time of 1:49.16. The team of junior Sean McGrath, Jones, Brown and freshman Lena Bless finished in 1:51.85 for third.

McGrath followed with a win in the 200 Back, tying Loyola's Jenna Egan in 2:08.55. Benn claimed third with a time of 2:08.92. Bogdanovski grabbed another win, completing the sweep of the 50, 100 and 200 Free as she took the 100 in 51.79. LaMastra picked up her second win as she completed a sweep of the breaststroke with a winning time of 2:24.60 in the 200. Chan then won the 200 Fly as she touched in 2:07.80. Cowan followed with a third place finish in 2:10.37. Hopkins closed out the weekend with a second place finish in the 400 Free Relay. Bogdanovski, Wisniewski, McGrath and junior Ellen Marcus combined for a time of 3:36.45.

Hopkins returns to the pool on Saturday, November 15 as the Blue Jays host the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. The Jays' home opener is slated for a 12:00 pm start.
