CARLISLE, PA - Liz Tommasi and Haley Bush combined for 18 second half points and the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays survived a furious second half rally from the Dickinson Red Devils to hold on 68-64 for its first Centennial Conference win on the season.
The Jays looked in control, up 16, 60-44 with seven minutes to play. But the Red Devils scrapped their way back into the game, going on a 20-6 run to cut the Jays lead to two, 66-64, with 1:32 remaining.
After a missed shot on the Blue Jays end, the host's called timeout and drew up a play to get Liz Schultz an open three. With 10 seconds left, Schultz's three rimmed out, and Dickinson couldn't control the rebound, giving Hopkins possession, up two. After a Dickinson foul, Katie Clark calmly stepped to the line and drained two free throws to seal the deal for the Jays.
With a one point lead coming out of the locker room at halftime, Tommasi and Bush combined to score the Blue Jays first nine points of the second half, to seize a 41-35 lead just two minutes into the period.
Nearly six minutes later, that lead swelled to 13, 54-41, following a Bush layup. After a Dickinson three, Alyssa Fleming answered with one of her own, followed by a Rachel Cook bucket and a free throw by Katie Clark, before Dickinson went on its final run.
The Red Devils led for most of the first half, after getting up 9-6 early. But prior to halftime, Hopkins took a 32-31 lead following two free throws by Bush. From that point on, the Blue Jays led the entire way, and seized their first conference win of the year.
For Hopkins, the starting backcourt of Clark and Tommasi finished with 11 and 14 points, respectively, while Clark also added five assists, four rebounds and four steals. She also finished 7-8 from the foul line, including 5-6 in the second half. Tommasi added four rebounds, and two steals to her final stat line.
Up front, Bush finished with 16 points and tied Fleming for a team-high seven rebounds in 30 minutes of work. With Ciara McCullagh battling foul trouble, Maggie Fruehan played admirably off the bench, finishing with 12 points and six rebounds on 6-11 from the field.
For Dickinson, Schultz led the team with 14 points, including three second half threes. Fellow starter Sarah Phillips tallied 11 for the Red Devils and added three threes of her own. The hosts got great production off the bench from Myonie Williamson and Mary Martin, as they combined for 22 points and 11 rebounds in defeat.
