ANNAPOLIS, MD - Host Navy used a six-goal second quarter to take control of the game and didn't look back in a 17-10 win over the Johns Hopkins water polo team in both team's regular-season finale Saturday night. The Blue Jays fall to 10-9 overall and 4-4 in the CWPA Southern Division, East Region. The Blue Jays finish the regular season in a three-way tie for second in the league standings.
The teams traded goals to open the game but Navy then strung together three straight to go up 4-1 with just seven seconds remaining in the period. Hopkins cut the deficit in half however when junior Langdon Froomer scored with one tick on the clock to make it 4-2.
The Mids opened the second quarter with four unanswered to push out to an 8-2 lead. The Blue Jays came right back with a pair of goals from sophomores Bret Pinsker and Matt Fraser to make it 8-4 with 3:38 to play in the quarter. Navy had the final say of the stanza; scoring the final two goals to spark a run that bridged halftime and saw the home team build a 12-4 lead.
Hopkins came back with three straight goals from Pinsker, Froomer and freshman Jono Gillette to cut the deficit to five. But a pair of Mid goals in the final minute of the quarter gave Navy a 14-7 lead. The teams traded goals in the final quarter as Navy took the seven-goal win.
Froomer led the Blue Jays with a hat trick and four points while also drawing four ejections. Fraser, Pinsker and junior Blake Range each had a pair of goals while junior Kevin Yee had two assists, two steals and three ejections drawn. Junior Erik Henrikson made three saves and had two steals in two quarters. Freshman John Wilson made nine saves and had one steal in two quarters.
Hopkins returns to action at the CWPA Southern Division Championships, hosted by Princeton, NJ, November 7-9.
