ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Johns Hopkins water polo team fell to Bucknell, 11-5, in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship fifth-place match on Sunday. The Blue Jays end their season with a 14-13 record and finish in sixth place at the CWPA Championship.
Bucknell scored the game's first two goals to take a 2-0 lead at the 4:16-mark in the first quarter. Freshman Jono Gillette got Hopkins on the board at 3:11 off an assist from sophomore Giovanni Cragnotti to cut the deficit in half. The Bison answered with three straight goals as the number four seed pushed out to a 5-1 lead with 7:34 to go in the second quarter. Senior co-captain Johnny Beal and sophomore Matt Fraser trimmed the deficit to two with goals at 7:14 and 1:30. Bucknell would push its lead back to three as Stefan Aleksic scored with just 22 seconds remaining in the period.
Sean Daley added to the Bison's lead just 58 seconds into the third quarter and it was 7-3 Bucknell. Beal added a five-meter goal at the 2:37-mark for the Blue Jays, but just 16 seconds later Aleksic answered for Bucknell. Junior Langdon Froomer scored a man-up goal at 6:14 to cut into the Bison lead, but they answered with three straight to take the 11-5 win and fifth place.
Beal led the Blue Jays with a pair of goals while Froomer had a goal and an assist. Freshman John Wilson finished with five saves in the loss. Beal was named to the CWPA Championship All-Tournament Team.
