GETTYSBURG, PA - The Johns Hopkins Blue Jays staved off a late push by the Ursinus Bears and held on, 2-1, to win the Centennial Conference semifinals Saturday evening. With the win the Hopkins moves to 16-3, while the loss drops Ursinus to 9-7-2 and ends their season. The Blue Jays will meet Swarthmore in the finals tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Gettysburg College.
Hannah Kronick tallied the first goal of the game at the 25 minute mark, after notching a goal from point-blank range after dribbling around Bear defenders. The goal was her 13th of the season.
The first half ended with the 1-0 Hopkins lead on the scoreboard and 13-4 disparity in shots, favoring the Blue Jays.
The second half saw a lot more back-and-forth action, with a second Hopkins goal coming at the 56:59 mark as Amanda Masse took a pass from Ana Bengoechea and blasted a shot from the right side of the box past Bears goalkeeper Courtney Sullivan. The goal Masse's first of the season.
In the 84th minute, following a Hopkins corner clearance attempt, Katherine Bell found herself with the ball for the Bears at the top of the box and blasted home a goal past goalkeeper Sarah Benett. The goal was Bell's second of the season and closed the gap to 2-1. But it was too little too late as the Bears couldn't find the equalizer in the final six minutes.
Both goalkeepers played well, with Sullivan stopping six shots while Benett turned back seven for the second-seeded Jays.
Tomorrow will mark the tenth consecutive season the Blue Jays will play in the Centennial Conference Championship. The Blue Jays won eight of those ten championships, including last season's.
