2014 Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, MA - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team competed at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday and went 0-5 against a tough field. Hopkins suffered losses to host Brandeis, Boston College, Brown, MIT and Yale. Sophomore Katherine Couch and junior Isabella So led the Blue Jays with 10 wins apiece.

Hopkins opened with an 18-9 loss to Brandeis as the Judges claimed the Sabre and Foil by 7-2 scores. The Blue Jays pulled out a close 5-4 win in the Epee. Couch won all three of her bouts, including the ninth and final bout to clinch the win for the Jays in the Epee. In the Foil, junior Ashley Lau and sophomore Ting Liu each won one bout. In the Sabre, So picked up both of the Blue Jays' wins.

In the second round, Hopkins earned a 5-4 win in the Sabre but Boston College won the Foil and Epee, each by a 6-3 score, to take the match 16-11. Sophomore Nastasia Winey won two of her three bouts in the Epee, while Lau won a pair in the Foil. So led the Sabre squad again by winning all three of her bouts and she also clinched the win in the eighth bout.

Against Brown, the Bears won the Sabre (7-2) and Foil (8-2) and took the match 17-10. Hopkins picked up a convincing 7-2 win in the Epee, led by Couch's three wins. Duca got the Blue Jays' lone win in the Foil and So picked up two wins in the Sabre. MIT claimed victory in the Sabre (8-1) and the Foil (6-3) and the overall win by a 17-10 score. The Blue Jays were victorious in the Epee (6-3) on the strength of a 3-0 performance by sophomore Charlotte Green. Lau won a pair of bouts in the Foil and So got the Jays' lone win in the Sabre.

Hopkins closed out the day with a 17-10 loss to Yale, though the Blue Jays picked up a win in the Epee (5-4). Couch and senior Gianna Puzzo combined for four wins with Puzzo getting the clinching win in the eighth bout. Lau led the Jays again in the Foil with two wins and it was So again in the Sabre with a 2-1 mark.
