Johns Hopkins Wins Three at Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, MA - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team went 3-2 at the annual Brandeis Invitational Sunday, earning wins over Boston College, MIT and Yale. Hopkins suffered losses to Brown and host Brandeis. Freshman Matthias Philippine led the Blue Jays with 10 wins while sophomore Patrick Rose and freshman John Vingoe each had nine victories.

Hopkins opened the day with a tough 15-12 loss to Brandeis tough the Blue Jays earned a dominant 8-1 victory in the Epee. Philippine and sophomore Nathaniel Green each went 3-0 in the Epee to lead JHU to the win. The Judges turned the table in the Sabre and Foil, winning each by a 7-2 score. In the Foil, freshman Ian Maddox and junior Jay Petrie each won one bout while sophomore Patrick Rose won two of three in the Sabre.

The Blue Jays then picked up a 20-7 win over the Eagles by sweeping all three weapons. Philippine once again went 3-0 as JHU claimed the Epee by a 7-2 score. Junior Glenn Balbus turned the same trick in the Foil and Hopkins won 6-3. Rose and Vingoe combined to go 6-0 to lead the Jays to a 7-2 win in the Sabre.

Brown then topped Hopkins, 18-9, and swept all three weapons. Philippine won two his three bouts but the Bears won the Epee, 7-2. Maddox, Petrie and freshman Jared LeBron each won a bout in a 6-3 loss in the Foil. And in the Sabre, Brown pulled out a 5-4 win by winning the final bout. Vingoe won two of his bouts to lead the Sabre squad versus the Bears.

Hopkins followed with a 19-8 win over MIT, including wins in the Foil and Epee. Freshman Denis Routkevitch led the Jays in the Epee by winning all three of his bouts as JHU won 6-3. The Blue Jays then swept the Foil with Balbus and LeBron combining for six of their nine wins. The Engineers edged the Jays, 5-4, in the Sabre though Vingoe won two of his three bouts.

JHU ended the day with a tight 14-13 win over Yale with wins in the Sabre and Epee. Philippine and junior Mark Zimmermann each won two bouts and Zimmermann clinched a 5-4 win in the final bout in the Epee. The Bulldogs claimed the Foil, 6-3, with LeBron, Petrie and Balbus each winning one. And in the Sabre, Vingoe, Rose and sophomore Daniel Dembner each won two to lead JHU to a 6-3 win.

Philippine finished with a 10-2 mark on the day in his first action of his career. Zimmermann went 8-4 on the day and is now 178-108 for his career, ranking him seventh in school history in career Epee wins. Balbus led the Foil squad with a 7-5 record to improve to 144-64 in his career while Petrie won five of his nine bouts and is now 177-92 in his career. Rose and Vingoe each went 9-6 to lead the Sabre squad.
