Johns Hopkins Sweeps Muhlenberg, Merchant Marine in CC Wrestling

Feb. 8, 2014

KINGS POINT, NY - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team improved its record to 9-5 overall and 6-1 in the Centennial Conference with a sweep of league rivals Muhlenberg and Merchant Marine Saturday evening. The Blue Jays opened with a 55-0 victory against the Mules and rallied to knock off the host Mariners, 22-15.

Against the Mules, the Blue Jays won the only two contested bouts at 125 and 149. Junior Paul Bewak scored a 7-5 victory against Jaryd Flank at 125 and senior Duncan Crystal added a 12-0 major decision victory against Chayoot Chengsupanimit. Johns Hopkins won the other eight bouts by forfeit to account for the 55-0 score.

The match against the host Mariners started at 157 and the Blue Jays got a 4-1 win by junior Christian Salera to take a quick 3-0 lead. Merchant Marine got back-to-back major decisions at 165 and 174 to grab an 8-4 lead and built the lead to 15-7 with another major at 197 and a regular decision at 285. Only a 9-1 major for Kyle Spangler 184 kept the Mariners from winning five straight bouts.

Circling back down to 125, the Blue Jays jump-started their comeback with Bewak and senior Ray Yagloski winning by decision, before senior Henry Stauber gave the Blue Jays an 18-15 lead with a 15-0 technical fall of Nathan Twito.

That set the stage for Crystal, who clinched the victory for the Blue Jays with a 10-2 major decision victory over Jack Walsh. Crystal is now 10-1 in his last 11 matches and 16-5 on the year.

Bewak's two wins improve his career record to 92-16 and move him into a tie for second place on Johns Hopkins' career victory list with Tyler Schmidt (2005-09).

Johns Hopkins will close the regular season on Wednesday, February 12 when the Blue Jays host McDaniel (7 pm). A win against the Green Terror would give the Blue Jays a school-record seventh Centennial Conference victory on the season.
