SPRINGFIELD, OH - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team fell in both of their matches today, bringing their record to an 0-3 start. The Blue Jays lost their morning match to No. 7 Wittenberg before suffering another defeat to No. 4 Hope.
Freshman Kristi Rhead led the Jays with nine assists against host Wittenberg. Senior Anne Cohen had 12 digs to go along with two service aces, while junior Stephanie Yokoyama tallied eight digs in the match.
The Jays struggled to get much going offensively, while Wittenberg rolled to a .247 hitting percentage during the match. For the Tigers, Emily Kahlig, Meghan Vodopich, and Kristina Fultz each tallied six kills, while Vodopich also passed out 15 assists.
Hopkins had little success against a stout Wittenberg defense, totaling just 19 kills throughout the match. The Jays lost easily in three sets, 25-14, 25-16, and 25-11.
In their second match of the day, the Hopkins offense displayed more success, but their defense could not halt the offensive firepower that Hope displayed. Amy Vanderstoep led Hope with 13 kills and an .812 hitting percentage, while Lauren Hazekamp dished out 37 assists across the three games.
For Hopkins, Rhead and junior Carolyn Zin combined for 16 assists. Junior Ali Cox tallied eight kills while sophomore Ally Hirsch finished with five, each tallying a hitting percentage of .188.
Cohen and Zin combined for 27 digs in the match, while freshman Erica Johnston served two aces.
The Blue Jays will look to bounce back next weekend as they host the Greg Giovanazzi Memorial Tournament at Goldfarb Gymnasium. The host Blue Jays will take on Bridgewater (VA) on Friday night before facing Maryland foes Stevenson and Goucher on Saturday.
