BALTIMORE, MD - Junior
Kenny DeStefano scored the game's only goal to lead the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over visiting Frostburg State on Wednesday night. The Blue Jays remain unbeaten at 4-0-1 on the season while the Bobcats slip to 2-2-1.
Hopkins controlled much of the play throughout the game, but due to the strong play of Frostburg State goalie Hassan Mostafa, the game remained scoreless until the 61st minute. That's when the Blue Jays finally broke through and got the goal on the foot of DeStefano. Senior Kotaro Mitsuhashi took a pass from junior co-captain Andrew Park about 30 yards out and one-timed it to his left. DeStefano ran onto it, took one touch into the box and slotted a shot low to the far post for his first goal of the season.
Mitsuhashi had a pair of great chances to give the Blue Jays a larger lead but the Blue Jays' leading scorer couldn't cash in. In the 66th minute, he dribbled in and beat Mostafa to his right before firing a shot on the Bobcats' net. But Mitchell Muise was there to kick the ball away and out of danger. In the 83rd minute, Mitsuhashi ripped a shot from 20 yards out that beat Mostafa but ricocheted off the right post and out.
Sophomore Matt Paris posted his third shutout of the season without making a save. On the other end, Mostafa made five saves and corralled numerous dangerous chances. Hopkins outshot Frostburg, 13-2, and had nine corners to just four for the visitors.
Hopkins returns to action in a week as the Blue Jays make the short trip up I-83 to take on the York College Spartans. The non-conference tilt is slated for a 4:00 pm start at Graham Field.
