NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The Johns Hopkins women's volleyball team fell in both its matches Saturday afternoon in straight sets. The Jays fell to No. 13 Christopher Newport, 3-0, in its first match before stumbling to Berry in its second match. With the losses, the Jays are now 3-8 on the season.
In the first set against tournament host CNU, the Jays were unable to find any offensive rhythm, finishing with a .088 hitting percentage and fell 25-16. The Jays battled in the second set and executed better offensively, finishing with a .184 hitting percentage compared to .171 by CNU. However the hitting percentage didn't change the result on the scoreboard, as the Jays fell 26-24. The host dominated the third set, as CNU rolled 25-16.
The offensive struggles continued in the second match of the day against Berry University. Hopkins hit just .110 for the match and got swept 19-25, 18-25, 16-25. On the other side of the net, Berry hit .237 and capitalized in the serve game too, with seven aces.
Freshman Liz Wuerstle led the way offensively for the Jays, tallying 16 kills on the day to go along with two service aces and nine digs. Classmate Kristi Rhead led the way in the passing game, dishing out 35 assists on the day, putting her over the 100-assist mark for the season.
Blue Jay Senior Anne Cohen was named to the all-tournament team after finishing with nine service aces and 46 digs in the four match tournament. Mount Union's Kara Berger was named tournament MVP.
The Blue Jays are back in action Wednesday night as they host Susquehanna. The match is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Goldfarb Gymnasium.
