HAVERFORD, PA - The host Haveford Fords used a pair of first-half goals to defeat Johns Hopkins, 2-0, in Centennial Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays slip to 4-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference, while the Fords improve to 4-2-0 and 1-0-0 in the CC.
Haverford jumped on Hopkins early, scoring what proved to be the game-winner in just the third minute off a set piece. Will Corkery sent the free kick to Colin Seitz, who redirected it to Russell Nicholson. The freshman quickly volleyed a shot low the left post for the score. Haverford added to its lead in the 24th minute as Brady Seitz's pass sprung Sam Yarosh for a one-on-one with sophomore goalie Matt Paris. With Paris coming out to cut off the angle, Yarosh slipped a shot wide right of Paris and just inside the right post to make it 2-0.
The Fords took the two-goal lead into the half, but it was all Blue Jays in the second as they outshot their hosts, 5-1. But Chris Gibson was able to keep Hopkins off the board as Haverford got the win.
Hopkins finished with a 10-9 edge in shots while Haveford had the edge in corners (4-1). Paris finished with four saves in the loss while Gibson made five to earn the shutout.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 27 as the Blue Jays host the Swarthmore Garnet. Game time for the Centennial Conference tilt is slated for 4:30 pm.
