CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball moved above .500 for the first time this season Wednesday night as they defeated Washington College in its first Centennial Conference match of the season. For the Jays (9-8, 1-0 CC), the win is the team's sixth straight.
Freshman Liz Wuerstle led the way for the Jays notching six kills on a .545 hitting percentage to go along with six service aces. Meanwhile Ally Hirsch and Mereze Visagie powered their way to a combined 21 kills in the three-set victory for the Jays.
Setters Carolyn Zin and Kristi Rhead combined for 37 of the team's 38 assists on 45 kills. For the match the Jays hit .239 while holding the Shorewomen (10-3, 0-1) to a .157 hitting percentage. Anne Cohen led the way defensively with 11 digs and Erica Johnston tallied 10. Visagie added three blocks, making her presence felt at the net all night.
For the Shorewomen, Kristin Lee led the way with 13 of the team's 30 kills. Sarah Bentley dished out 25 assists, while Rachel Baker and Audrey Utchen combined for 27 digs.
The Blue Jays are in action next on Saturday as they host Muhlenberg. The match is set to start at 1 p.m. in Goldfarb Gymnasium.
