BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team got out to a 22-5 lead 10 minutes into the game and never looked back, defeating the Dickinson Red Devils, 81-42.
The Jays used great defense to build a 40-15 halftime advantage, holding the Red Devils to 6-24 shooting in the half and forcing eight turnovers. The Jays also used a clear size advantage to outrebound the visitors 23-13 in the first 20 minutes of play. Hopkins also exploited the lack of Dickinson size on the offensive end, constantly getting into the lane, finishing the first half with 26 points in the paint.
Hopkins (9-5, 6-2 CC) continued to crash the boards in the second half, and finished the game with a lopsided 49-28 advantage on the boards. The Jays added 22 more paint points in the second half, outscoring Dickinson 48-16 in that area for the game.
Starting for the sixth time this season, junior Beatriz Williams proved to be the game's star. Williams used her superior athleticism to constantly put pressure on the opposition's defense, finishing tied for a career-high in points with 16 and snagging a career-high 11 rebounds. She finished 7-10 from the field and 2-4 from the charity stripe, and totaled a team-high 26 minutes. The double-double was her second of the season.
Classmate Liz Tommasi provided a spark off the bench for the Jays. In 18 minutes of work she was highly effective, finishing with 12 points on 6-10 from the field to go along with a career-high six rebounds and four steals. In three games off the bench, Tommasi is averaging 13.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.3 steals.
Joining the juniors in career-high performances were Ciara McCullagh and Dannielle Brown. McCullagh finished with 10 points in 12 minutes, while Brown finished with five.
For Dickinson (3-10, 1-8 CC), Liz Martin led the way in the scoring column, finishing with nine points off the bench on 4-8 shooting.
The Blue Jays are next in action Saturday afternoon, as they will host Ursinus for a matinee game, with tip-off scheduled for 1 pm.
