Late Pin Lifts McDaniel Past Johns Hopkins, 23-17

Jan. 14, 2015

WESTMINSTER, MD - McDaniel heavyweight Robb Donovan scored a takedown of Johns Hopkins' Ellis Flannery midway through the second period, worked him to his back and came up with the deciding pin to lift host McDaniel to a 23-17 victory over visiting Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference wrestling action Wednesday night. The win improves McDaniel's record to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial, while the Blue Jays slip to 1-9 overall and 0-1 in the Centennial.

In a back-and-forth match throughout, the Terror erased a late 17-14 deficit with wins in the final two bouts to snap a four-match losing streak to the Blue Jays. Nick Cross set up Donovan's deciding pin with a 7-1 win over Kory Johnson at 197 to knot the match at 17. Flannery trailed 2-0 early in the final bout, but worked a five-point move of his own and nearly pinned Donovan in the first period before Donovan worked his way free and eventually scored the second-period takedown that led to his pin.

Early on, Hopkins jumped to a quick 8-0 lead as Paul Bewak and Evan Krumheuer opened with wins by major decision. The Terror struck back quickly as Alvontae Drummond answered with a major decision of his own at 141 to slice the deficit to 8-4 and Trey Mitchell followed with a first-period pin to give the Terror a 10-8 lead after four bouts.

The Blue Jays took three of the next four matches to grab the 17-14 lead. A Christian Salera decision at 157 for the Blue Jays gave Hopkins an 11-10 lead, but Luke Yox scored an 8-0 major over Sam Sands to give the Terror a 14-11 lead with four bouts remaining.

Jared Forman took a wild 16-12 decision from Logan Yox at 174 to draw the Blue Jays even at 14 and senior Evan Johnson took a tough 5-2 win from Jake Pooton at 184 to give the Blue Jays the 17-14 lead. That set the stage for the win by decision from Cross and Donovan's deciding pin.
