BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team used a 26-10 run over the final seven minutes of the first half and first five minutes of the second half to gain a 20 point lead, which it would never relinquish, en route to a 56-37 win over the visiting Ursinus Bears on Saturday afternoon.
A layup by Stacy Fairey gave Hopkins the advantage, 11-10, and sparked a 7-0 run over the next three minutes. After Ursinus countered with a 3-0 run, Hopkins went on a 9-2 run, capped by a Katie Clark jumper, to take an 11 point advantage into the intermission.
Coming out of the break, the Jays went on a 13-4 run, using baskets from Maggie Fruehan, Alyssa Fleming, Haley Bush and Clark to take a 39-19 lead. From there the lead hovered around 20, topping out at 24 following a made free throw by Dannielle Brown.
The Jays played stellar defense throughout the game, holding the Bears to 14-64 from the field, including 2-17 from three-point range. The defense also held Jessica Porada to just nine points on 4-14 shooting. Porada came into the game fourth in the conference in scoring, averaging 15.9 points per game, and was averaging 19 in her previous three games.
Hopkins also dominated on the backboard, outrebounding Ursinus a whopping 57-31 for the game. Beatriz Williams, Ciara McCullagh, Janay Smith, Fruehan and Clark each collected six.
Clark led the Jays with 15 points on 6-10 from the field.
The Blue Jays will return to action Wednesday, as they travel to the Eastern Shore to take on Washington College. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 pm.
