BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team split a pair of Centennial Conference dual meets at Goldfarb Gymnasium Saturday afternoon as the Blue Jays topped Washingotn & Lee, 30-16, before falling to the United States Merchant Marine Academy 21-16. USMMA went 2-0 on the day as the Mariners also topped Gettysburg (30-9), while Gettysburg ended its day with a 1-1 record as the Bullets took W&L, 40-9.

In the tightest match of the day, the Merchant Marine Academy broke a 10-10 tie with a decisions at 174 and 184 and a technical fall at 197 to pull out to a 21-10 lead before the Blue Jays won by forfeit at 285 to account for the 21-16 final score.

The featured bout of the Johns Hopkins-USMMA match came at 125, where Johns Hopkins' Paul Bewak, currently ranked fifth in the nation, scored a 10-2 major decision victory over Michael Mui, who is ranked just outside the top 10 nationally by d3wrestle.com. Bewak, who improved his career record with 117-22 with two wins today, jumped out to an 8-0 lead early in the third period, then used a late escape and a point of riding time to grab the win by major decision.

Hopkins also got wins from two of its other three seniors against the Mariners as Christian Salera edged Nic Watson, 3-2, at 157 and Welles Sakmar scored a 4-2 victory over Mike Maye at 165. Sakmar's win drew Hopkins into the 10-10 tie, but the three straight wins for the Mariners secured the victory.

The Blue Jays opened the day with the win over W&L as five wins by forfeit provided all the scoring the Blue Jays would need.
