ALLENTOWN, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team struggled offensively and trailed the whole game, falling to Muhlenberg College, 50-31, Saturday evening. The 31 points was the lowest point total for the Jays this season.
The Jays started slow out of the gate, quickly getting down 6-0 before a timeout was taken. Following a Maggie Fruehan bucket out of the timeout, the Mules went on a 7-0 run to bump the lead to 13-2.
The Jays battled back though, using a 9-1 run following jumpers from Katie Clark, Beatriz Williams, a Stacy Fairey three, and an Alyssa Fleming layup to get the deficit to three. After the teams traded baskets, the Mules used a 7-0 run to take a 23-13 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Out of the intermission, the host's went on a 6-2 run that bumped the lead to 14. Hopkins responded with another Fairey three and an old-fashioned three-point-play by Beatriz Williams, sandwiched around a Mules bucket, to get the margin to 10, 31-21.
Following a Laura Gregory jumper, Jessica Brown answered with a three of her own, bringing the Jays to within nine with 10:01 to play.
From there, the Mules tightened up the defense, forcing two missed shots and two turnovers, and went on a 10-0 run of their own, getting four points from Gregory to go along with six more from Leanna Tallamy, bringing the lead to 43-24 with 6:23 remaining.
The Jays ended the bleeding 1:56 later, as Fairey hit her third triple of the game. But it was too little too late, and that would be the last basket for the Jays.
Muhlenberg's 2-3 zone defense stifled the Jays all night, forcing 20 turnovers and holding the Jays to 13-55 shooting. Fairey led the way in scoring for the second time this season, with nine points off the bench to go along with two blocks and a steal.
Meanwhile, Tallamy and Gregory led the way for the Mules, as each finished with a double-double. For Tallamy, the 16 point 13 rebound outing was her 11th consecutive double-double, while Gregory finished with 14 points and 11 boards. In the middle of the zone, Christina Santone used her size and length to block six shots and grab nine boards.
The Jays are next in action Tuesday night as they host McDaniel. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm.
