Johns Hopkins Defeats Haverford at Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team went 1-4 at the annual Philadelphia Invitational and earned a win over Haverford. JHU defeated Haverford while dropping decisions to Sacred Heart, Fairleigh Dickinson, Northwestern and 10th-ranked Temple.

Hopkins opened the day with a 21-6 win over Haverford with a sweep of all three weapons. Senior Ilana Regenbogen and junior Rachel Viqueira led the Blue Jays with a combined six wins as the Blue Jays won the Foil 8-1. Sophomores Charlotte Green and Katherine Couch did the same in the Epee, leading JHU to an 8-1 victory. The Blue Jays edged the Fords, 5-4, in the Sabre with senior Rachel Kalina clinching the win in the final bout. Kalina won all three of her bouts for the Jays.

JHU then fell to Sacred Heart, 16-11, losing close decisions in all three bouts. Regenbogen and Viqueira combined for the Jays' four wins in the Foil in a 5-4 loss to the Pioneers. In the Epee, it was Couch and senior Gianna Puzzo that picked up four wins in a 5-4 defeat to Sacred Heart. The Pioneers won the Sabre, 6-3, with Kalina, sophomore Nancy Kim and freshman Kathleen Demaria each getting a win.

Hopkins lost to Fairleigh Dickinson, 17-10, with the Blue Jays winning the Epee. The Knights opened with a 9-0 win in the Foil but the Blue Jays bounced back with a 7-2 win in the Epee. Green and Puzzo combined for six of the Jays' wins in the weapon. FDU wrapped up the win with a 6-3 decision in the Sabre, with Demaria leading the way for JHU with two wins.

The Blue Jays next fell to the Wildcats by a 19-8 score, while winning the Epee. The `Cats won the Foil by an 8-1 score with Viqueira picking up the Jays' win. Hopkins followed with a 5-4 win in the Epee, led by Couch's three wins. She also clinched the win in the final bout. In the Sabre, Northwestern earned a 7-2 win with Kalina earning both of JHU's wins.

Hopkins ended the day with a 20-7 loss to Temple, with the Owls sweeping all three weapons. Viqueira led the Jays in the Foil with three wins as the Owls won 5-4. The Epee saw Puzzo earn a pair of wins in a 7-2 win by Temple. The Owls completed the win with an 8-1 decision in the Sabre, with Kalina got the Jays' win.

Puzzo led the Epee squad with 10 wins on the day as she improved to 20-15 on the season and 180-110 for her career. Couch earned nine wins on the day to raise her record to 29-13 this season. Viqueira paced the Foil squad with nine wins as she improved to 137-48 in her career. Kalina won eight bouts to lead the Sabre squad and pushed her career record to 182-62. Hopkins returns to action on February 8 at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational.
