Johns Hopkins Picks Up Three Wins at Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team went 3-2 at the annual Philadelphia Invitational on Sunday hosted by Penn. Hopkins earned wins over Drew (25-2), Lafayette (20-7) and Haverford (19-8) while dropping decisions to eighth-ranked Penn (18-9) and Sacred Heart (14-13).

Hopkins opened the day against Drew, dropping just two bouts in the win. The Blue Jays earned a 9-0 win in the Foil by forfeit. Sophomore Nathaniel Green led Hopkins to a 7-2 win in the Epee by going 3-0. In the Sabre, sophomore Daniel Dembner, senior Aravind Menon and freshman David Austin each went 3-0 for the Jays.

JHU picked up its second straight win, defeating Lafayette by sweeping all three weapons. The Blue Jays did not drop a bout in the Foil, with junior Glenn Balbus and freshman Jared LeBron combining for six wins. Hopkins edged Lafayette, 5-4, in the Epee with freshman Max White clinching the win in the eighth bout. And in the Sabre, the Jays earned a 6-3 win, led by sophomore Patrick Rose and freshman Sandy Vingoe, who each won two bouts.

The Blue Jays then fell to the host Quakers as the hosts took all three weapons. Penn just beat Hopkins in the Foil, 5-4 while LeBron picked up a pair of wins for JHU. Green and freshman Denis Routkevitch each won a bout in the Epee in a 7-2 loss. The Quakers completed their win with a 6-3 decision in the Sabre, with Vingoe earning all three of the Blue Jays' wins.

Hopkins next dropped a closed result versus Sacred Heart while winning the Foil (5-4) and Sabre. Balbus and Maddox each won two bouts with Maddox clinching the win in the Foil. In the Epee, the Pioneers took a 7-2 win with junior Mark Zimmermann getting both wins for the Jays. Hopkins then won the Sabre by a 6-3 score, led by Rose's three wins.

JHU wrapped up the day with the win over Haverford by sweeping all three weapons. Freshman Ian Maddox won all three of his bouts to lead the Blue Jays to a 6-3 win over the Fords in the Foil. Hopkins won by the same score in the Epee, led by Zimmermann and White with two wins each. The Blue Jays closed out the day with a 7-2 win in the Sabre, highlighted by Rose's three wins.

Balbus led the Foil squad with eight wins, going 8-3 on the day, and improving to 26-10 on the season. Maddox added seven wins in the Foil, pushing his season record to 22-11. Vingoe led the Sabre squad with a 7-1 record as he raised his record to 28-8. Zimmermann topped the Epee squad with five wins and is now 26-19 this season. Hopkins returns to action on February 7 at the Duke Invitational.
