Box Score Jan. 31, 2015

Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - A Haley Bush layup at the 14:39 mark sparked a Blue Jays 12-2 run, which was capped by an Alyssa Fleming bucket, giving the Jays a 46-35 lead that they would never relinquish, en route to 58-46 win against the visiting Haverford Fords. Senior Maggie Fruehan led Hopkins with 13 points and nine rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.

The Blue Jays never had a first half lead, as they shot just 10-29 from the field and committed seven turnovers. However, the home team did dominate the paint, scoring 18 of their 24 first half points in the colored area of the floor. Additionally, the Jays forced eight first half Fords turnovers and converted them into 10 points.

Coming out of halftime down four, 28-24, the Jays used buckets from Liz Tommasi and Jess Brown to go on a 7-2 run and take a 31-30 lead, their first of the game. After a pair of made free throws by Sierra Berkel, Bush made her layup to spark the Blue Jays run.

Berkel would stop the bleeding with two layups, sandwiched around a Shannon Smith made free throw, to bring the deficit to five. Fruehan answered with a bucket of her own, and Beatriz Williams added a jumper on the left baseline to push the lead back to nine.

Following a timeout, Elizabeth Lynch drained a three for the Fords, before a Jacquelyne Pizzuto bucket cut the Jays lead to four.

That would prove to be as close as the Fords would get though, as Williams nailed another jumper before Hopkins marched to the foul line and buried six foul shots to seal the win.

Williams finished with eight points and nine rebounds and two blocks in 22 minutes. Hopkins shot 12-27 in the second half from the field and committed just two turnovers, while adding 12 more points in the paint. The Jays bench played well throughout, outscoring the Fords bench 27-13 on the night.

For Haverford, Lynch finished with a 16 point 11 rebound double-double in defeat.

The Jays are next in action Wednesday as they will travel to Franklin & Marshall to play the Diplomats. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
