HAVERFORD, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team couldn't find the bottom of the net in the final 3:02, and dropped their first conference game in 2015 to the Haverford Fords, 51-47. Liz Tommasi led the way off the bench for the Jays with 17 points, including 12 in the first half.
The Jays came out of the halftime intermission, tied at 27 with the host Fords. Quickly the Jyas took a 37-34 lead after baskets by Haley Bush, Katie Clark, Tommasi and Alyssa Fleming, as well as a Fleming free throw. An Elizabeth Lynch three with 10:55 left tied the game at 37.
From there the Fords used a 10-2 run capped by a Anna Schrencengost layup to take a 47-39 lead with 6:29 remaining.
Clark would stop the bleeding with a deep three and the deficit was cut to five with 5:25 left. After a strong defensive possession, Hopkins came down on the offensive end and worked the ball inside to Ciara McCullagh. McCullagh used her size and strength to draw a foul on Pallavi Juneja, and calmly knocked down two from the charity stripe, bringing the score to 47-44 with 4:41 remaining.
Following an offensive possession that saw Haverford get two three point attempts and two free throws, the Jays still found themselves down three. On the next offensive possession Clark buried a triple, tying the game for fifth time with 3:02 left.
But the Fords responded with a layup by Jacquelyne Pizzuto to take the lead with 2:42 left. On the next possession Beatriz Williams missed a jumper that led to a Shannon Smith layup, bumping the Fords lead to four with 2:14 left to play.
The Jays had chances down the stretch, but couldn't convert, going 0-7 from the field and 0-2 from the foul line, and the Fords held on, 51-47 for the win. Lynch led the way for the Fords with 16 points and six rebounds.
Hopkins (7-5, 4-2) is next in action on Saturday as it plays host to Swarthmore. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 pm at Goldfarb Gymnasium.
