BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women's swim team opened the season on a strong note, defeating Loyola (196-168) and Boston College (201.50-162.50) at the annual Thomas Murphy Invitational. The Blue Jays won 15 of the 18 swimming events and sophomore Anna Wisniewski led the Jays with three individual wins.
Hopkins opened the meet by winning the 400 Medley Relay by more than four seconds. Sophomores Michelle Kim, Gwynnie LaMastra, Wisniewski and Kaitlin Jones combined for the win in 3:56.69. The Blue Jay team of junior Kristen Kaiser, freshman Julia Pacitti, junior Abby Brown and sophomore Lena Bless finished in sixth place with a time of 4:06.18. Sophomore Courtney Cowan then won the 500 Free in 5:06.92, beating the field to the wall by more than five and a half seconds. Freshmen Emily Cheng finished in fourth (5:16.00) and Rabia Syed took fifth (5:17.10).
Jones and LaMastra combined to go one-two in the 200 IM while sophomore Sara Wujciak placed fifth. Jones grabbed the win as she touched in 2:09.89, while LaMastra finished in 2:10.42 and Wujciak in 2:13.79. Wisniewski earned her first win, taking the top spot in the 50 Free with a time of 24.21. Hopkins closed out day one with a win in the 800 Free Relay. Chen, Syed, Cowan and Jones won the event in 7:49.79 while the team of Kaiser, LaMastra, Pacitti and sophomore Sarah Fauska finished in third in 8:04.19.
Day two opened with a Hopkins win in the 200 Free Relay for Wisniewski, Jones, Cowan and LaMastra in 1:38.86. Jones then won the 400 IM with an NCAA provisional time of 4:35.99. Chan placed second in the 100 Fly in 57.70 while Brown took third in 59.34. Wisniewski followed with her second win, touching in 1:57.87 to win the 200 Free while junior Lindsay Kriz finished in third in 2:01.39. Kim was the Blue Jays' top finisher in the 100 Back, placing sixth in 1:01.42. Chan followed just one-hundredth of a second later for seventh place.
LaMastra grabbed her first win, taking first in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:06.44. Cowan followed with a 27-second win in the 1650 Free, touching in 17:50.89. The Blue Jays picked up another relay win, as Kim, LaMastra, Wisniewski and Jones combined for a time of 1:48.57 in the 200 Medley Relay. Cheng was the top Blue Jay in the 200 Back, placing fourth in 2:11.30. Wisniewski earned win number three in the 100 Free as she touched in 52.62. LaMastra completed her sweep of the Breast events, winning the 200 by more than three seconds with a time of 2:24.26.
Brown took the top spot in the 200 Fly, finishing in 2:09.52 to close out the individual events. The Blue Jays wrapped up the meet with a win in the 400 Free Relay as Wisniewski, Jones, Cowan and Cheng combined for a winning time of 3:32.89.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, November 7 as the Blue Jays travel to Glassboro, NJ to take on Rowan at 11:00 am.
