BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's swim team opened the season with a win and a tie at the annual Thomas Murphy Invitational. Hopkins beat host Loyola (226-132) and tied Boston College (182-182). The Blue Jays won half of the 18 swimming events, led by juniors Andy Greenhalgh and Evan Holder with two individual wins each.
Hopkins opened day one with a win and fourth-place finish in the 400 Medley Relay. The team of sophomore Jan Hagemeister, Holder, sophomores Mark Wilson and Michael Ashmead won the event in 3:27.15. Freshman Darren Loh, junior Bryan Pon, sophomore Kyle Otazu and junior Jeremy Bauchwitz finished in 3:32.02. Greenhalgh then picked up his first win of the meet, posting an NCAA provisional time of 4:35.40 in the 500 Free. Otazu followed in second place with a time of 4:40.85. Holder followed with his first win, touching in 1:53.71 in the 200 IM.
Bauchwitz placed second in the 50 Free in 21.64, edging out Ashmead by seven-hundredths of a second. Hopkins wrapped up the night with a win in the 800 Free Relay. Ashmead, Otazu, Greenhalgh and sophomore Davis Knox won in 6:58.37. Freshman John Chu, Wilson, freshman Michael Wohl and sophomore Luke Johnson took fourth in 7:09.50. Day two opened with a second-place finish in the 200 Free Relay as Holder, Ashmead, Bauchwitz and Chu combined for a time of 1:26.58.
Otazu and senior Billy Gravley then went two-three in the 400 IM, finishing in 4:13.96 and 4:18.08, respectively. Wilson followed with a win the 100 Fly, touching in 51.35. Holder grabbed his second win as he took the top spot in the 200 Free in 1:42.66 and Chu placed third in 1:46.36. Hagemeister finished third in the 100 Back, in 52.91, while Loh took fourth in 53.05. Freshman Peter Lazorchak then took third in the 100 Breast in 59.32.
Greenhalgh earned his second win with an NCAA provisional time of 15:52.09 in the 1650 Free. Gravley placed third in 16:46.02 and senior Mickey McGoldrick took fourth in 16:51.86. The Blue Jays placed second in the 200 Medley Relay as Loh, Holder, Wilson and Ashmead finished in 1:34.78. Hagemeister, Pon, Otazu and Bauchwitz followed in fourth with a time of 1:36.24. Sophomore Andrew Gibson placed second in the 200 Back (1:54.49) and Loh took third (1:55.55).
Bauchwitz then took second in the 100 Free, touching in 47.71. Junior Scott Sterrett finished in third place in the 200 Breast, clocking in at 2:08.94 and sophomore Colburn Yu finished in fourth (2:13.75). Otazu earned a win in the final individual event, finishing in 1:55.07 in the 200 Fly. Wilson followed in third in a time of 1:55.71. Hopkins ended the meet with second and fourth-place finishes in the 400 Free Relay. Ashmead, Otazu, Holder and Bauchwitz combined for a time of 3:07.34 while Chu, Wohl, Johnson and sophomore Austin Wilson finished in 3:12.37.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, November 7 as the Blue Jays travel to Glassboro, NJ to take on Rowan at 11:00 am.
