? The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins water polo team didn't take its first lead until early in the third quarter, but never trailed again in an 11-9 win over visiting Navy Wednesday afternoon. Junior Matt Fraser led the Blue Jays with four goals and six points, while junior Erik Henrikson made 12 saves.
How it Happened
? Navy took a 3-0 lead just past the midway point of the first quarter, thanks to a smothering defense that limited Hopkins' offensive opportunities. The Blue Jays got things when the clock ticked under three minutes, scoring three unanswered in a span of 88 seconds. Junior Matt Fraser sparked the Blue Jays' run with their first two goals, senior co-captain Kevin Yee then tied the match with 1:24 to go. The Mids retook the lead just 16 seconds later however.
? Navy took a two-goal lead with David Huber's third goal of the afternoon, 45 seconds into the quarter. But a pair of goals from Yee and freshman Giorgio Cico evened the score at 5-5 with 5:48 to play in the quarter. Navy grabbed the lead again on a Carl Dowzicky goal but the 1:29 to play before the half Fraser completed his hat trick to tie the game again.
? Sophomore Jono Gillette gave the Blue Jays' their first lead of the match 2:13 into the third, and Yee pushed the score to 8-6 with his third of the match less than a minute later. The Mids answered with two straight of their own to tie the match at 8-8 with 2:45 to go in the quarter. Junior Giovanni Cragnotti and Fraser then sandwiched goals around a strike from Navy and JHU le 10-9 going at the end of three.
? Freshman Andreas Katsis scored what turned out to be the only goal of the fourth quarter to stake Hopkins to an 11-9 lead with 5:07 to play. The defense did the rest for the Blue Jays.
What it Means
? Johns Hopkins is now 5-48 all-time against Navy, including 4-12 at home.
? The Blue Jays improved to 3-1 in the CWPA Southern Division, East Region and are a game up on the Princeton Tigers (2-1) in the standings.
