GETTYSBURG, PA- With the game tied at 42-42 and just 24 seconds on the clock, Liz Tommasi drove the lane and found a wide open Beatriz Williams, who finished a layup and put Johns Hopkins in the lead for good. The Blue Jays held on to win their Centennial Conference opener, 45-43, on the road against Gettysburg.
Hopkins opened the game strong and was ahead 12-6 after the first quarter. The Bullets came back in the second quarter, eventually tying the contest at 23 apiece as the teams went back to their locker rooms for half time.
Gettysburg was ahead by five after three quarters, but JHU opened the final frame with a 9-0 run to take a four-point lead of its own. A Jessica Porter jumper with 1:47 remaining would tie the game at 42-42. After the squads traded empty possessions, Tommasi was able to find Williams for the go-ahead basket with 24 seconds left.
The Bullets hit a free throw to cut the Hopkins lead to one, but Katie Clark converted a free throw of her own with 10 seconds left to bring the lead back to two. A Gettysburg three-point attempt wouldn't go in the final seconds and the Blue Jays were able to hold on to improve their overall record to 2-1 on the season and win their Centennial Conference opener for the third straight season.
Tommasi led the Blue Jays with 13 points, while Williams contributed with 10 points. Janay Smith collected a game-high-tying nine rebounds. Porter led the Bullets with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Hopkins will return to the court Saturday when it hosts #6 New York University in Goldfarb Gymnasium at 4pm.
