• The Short Story: The third-seeded Johns Hopkins water polo team opened the CWPA Southern Championship with a 13-6 win over Mercyhurst Friday night. Four different Blue Jays scored two goals as they improve to 17-8 on the season.
How it Happened
• With the score tied at 1-1 just 40 seconds into the game, junior Giovanni Cragnotti scored to ignite a 4-1 run as the Blue Jays built a 5-2 lead.
• The scoring was much slower in the second quarter as there were just two goals scored and Hopkins led 7-2 at the half. Senior co-captain Langdon Froomer and freshman Andreas Katsis got the goals as the Blue Jays pushed their lead to five.
• The teams traded goals in the third quarter and the Blue Jays took a 9-4 advantage into the final quarter. The back-and-forth continued throughout the fourth and Hopkins took the 13-6 win.
What it Means
• Hopkins is now 9-3 all-time against Mercyhurst and has won four straight in the series.
Inside the Box Score
• Senior co-captain Langdon Froomer and freshman Josh Kurtz totaled four points each on two goals and two assists. Senior co-captain Kevin Yee finished with three points (2g, 1a) and is now just one point shy of reaching 200 for his career.
• Yee also had three steals while classmate Garrett Davidson had a pair, along with two goals.
• Sophomore John Wilson made five saves while senior Erik Henrikson made a pair of saves.
