Johns Hopkins Bests 15th-ranked Bucknell, 8-4

Nov. 7, 2015

The Basics
• Score: Johns Hopkins 8, #15 Bucknell 4
• Records: JHU (19-8), BU (16-10)
• Location: Lewisburg, PA • Kinney Natatorium
• The Short Story: The third-seeded Johns Hopkins water polo team did something it had only done three times in the last 25 years – beat Bucknell in Lewisburg. This win had bigger implications as it gave Hopkins a berth in the CWPA Southern Championship title match – just the second such appearance for the Blue Jays.

How it Happened
• The game didn't get off to a great start for the Blue Jays as the Bison took an early 1-0 lead on a five-meter shot just 25 seconds in and Bucknell doubled its lead just over a minute later. Hopkins got on the board with a goal from senior co-captain Langdon Froomer with 2:31 to play. Nate Hunter answered 33 seconds later and the Bison led 3-1. Freshman Josh Kurtz pulled Hopkins back with in one by the end of the first quarter.
• The Blue Jays would take over from there, as Kurtz's goal sparked a six-goal run that spanned the first, second and third quarters. Freshman Giorgio Cico tied the game 1:12 into the second quarter and 80 seconds later, junior Matt Fraser put the Blue Jays on top. Freshman Andreas Katsis would stake Hopkins to a 5-3 lead at the half.
• Hopkins continued to add to its lead in the third quarter with goals from Froomer and Cico to make it a 7-3 game. RJ Moore got the Bison back on the board with 4:33 to play in the match, ending a scoreless drought of 23:25. That's as close as Bucknell would get as Froomer would tack on one more, completing his hat trick with 2:49 to play.

What it Means
• Johns Hopkins is now 24-41 all-time against Bucknell while winning in Lewisburg for just the fourth time since the series began in 1990.
• Hopkins is in the CWPA Southern Championship title match for just the second time ever and first since 2007. The Blue Jays have also guaranteed a berth in the CWPA Championship November 20-22.

Inside the Box Score

• Senior Blake Range had a team-high three steals and also blocks two shots.
• Sophomore John Wilson made 10 saves, including one on five meter, and had a pair of steals in the win.
• The Bison's four goals are the fewest they've scored in the series since the Blue Jays won 9-3 on September 20, 2003.
