LANCASTER, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team had five players score in double figures, including a 10 point and 11 rebound effort by Beatriz Williams, her third double-double of the season, in its 70-53 win Wednesday night over the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. With the win, the Jays move to 13-7 on the year, and 10-4 in Centennial Conference play.
After the Diplomats jumped out to a quick 9-8 lead, the Jays responded with a 19-4 run, taking a 27-10 lead with 5:19 remaining in the first half. From there, the Diplomats climbed back into the game, getting the deficit down to nine, 35-26, going into halftime.
Coming out of the half, the Jays used a 21-9 run to take a 56-35 lead nearly halfway through the second half. After and old-fashioned three-point-play by Shannon O'Connor, Jess Brown knocked down a jumper of her own, making the lead 20.
Sarah Haddon responded with two more free throws for the Diplomats before Katie Clark sandwiched two three-pointers around a made free throw by Erica Brown, bringing the Jays lead to 23, 64-41 with 7:29 remaining.
Following a Kara Bacile free throw, Williams made a layup to give Hopkins a 24 point lead, its biggest of the night, with 5:05 remaining. From there the Jays would hold strong, en route to the 17 point win.
Williams wasn't the only Blue Jay with a strong performance, as both Liz Tommasi and Clark tallied 13 points apiece, pacing the visitors in the scoring column.
The reserves also played a huge role for the Jays, as the bench bunch combined to outscore the host's bench, 26-5, led by 10 point performances by Stacy Fairey and Maggie Fruehan, respectively.
In addition to her strong scoring and rebounding performance, Williams tallied five blocked shots, a career-high and fifth in Hopkins history.
The Diplomats were led by Haddon, who finished 5-9 from the field for 16 points and added four rebounds and two steals to her stat line.
The Jays are next in action Saturday as they travel to Swarthmore College to take on the Garnet for a 1 pm tip-off.
