Offensive Outburst Propels Jays In Season-Opener

March 13, 2015

Box Score

FORT MYERS, FL - Craig Hoelzer and Raul Shah got the hit-fest started for Hopkins in the second inning and the Blue Jays never looked back, totaling 16 hits on the day, in a 16-2 win over Olivet College.

After a 1-2-3 first inning, Hoelzer knocked a single into right field. Shah followed that with a double into the right-center gap, pushing Hoelzer to third. A Mitch Weaver sacrifice fly to left field scored Hoelzer and got the Jays on the board.

Following a flyout to center, the Jays drew back-to-back walks by Jake Rogers and Conor Reynolds. With the bases loaded, Brian Lin stepped in and knocked a two-run single to right field, scoring Shah and Rogers. Chris Casey kept the inning rolling with a single to left, scoring Reynolds. All told the inning ended with four runs on four hits for the Blue Jays.

After a scoreless third, the bats were at it again in the fourth. With Orgielewicz on first after being walked, Rogers came up to the plate and drilled a triple into the right-center field gap. A single by Reynolds pushed Rogers across home plate. Lin one-upped Reynolds with a double to right and the Jays had two on with nobody out.

After a Casey pop out to the second baseman, Colin McCarthy hit a sac-fly to right, scoring Reynolds and pushing Lin to third. Hoelzer stepped in next, and hammered a double down the right field line, scoring Lin. Shah singled Hoelzer home in the following at-bat, pushing the lead to 9-2.

Reynolds added one more to the Blue Jays total in the fifth as he crossed home plate on a sac-fly by Casey.

The Jays capped their scoring off with a six-run sixth inning. Hoelzer led off the inning with his second double and Shah pushed him to third on a groundout. Weaver was next up and he smashed a two-run shot over the fence in right-center for his first homer of the season.

Following a sequence of hit-batsman and a walk, TJ Gordon reached base on an Olivet error, loading the bases for the Jays as Jon Hayden stepped up to the plate. Batting for the first time, Hayden ripped a single to right field, scoring two. Next up was Joe Conlon who laced a double into the gap in right-center, scoring Gordon and Hayden.

Not to get lost in the scoring was the performance from the Blue Jays' pitching staff. Starter Trevor Williams battled back after allowing a run in each of the first two innings, and finished with six strikeouts while allowing just five hits in six innings pitched.

Blue Jay relievers Jonathan Oliveros, Alex Ross and Andrew Zigmont were lights out as well, combining for five strikeouts while allowing just three hits in three innings pitched.

The Jays are back in action tomorrow with against Minnesota-Morris.
