Johns Hopkins Upsets Ninth-Ranked Stony Brook, 7-5

Box Score April 7, 2015

Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - The 20th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team scored the last three goals of the game and killed the final seven minutes to upset ninth-ranked Stony Brook, 7-5, on Tuesday night. The Blue Jays win their eighth straight as they improve to 10-2 on the season while the Seawolves suffer their first loss of the season and fall to 11-1.

Trailing 5-4 after back-to-back Stony Brook goals, Hopkins scored three goals in just over seven minutes to go up 7-5 and that would be the difference. Junior Kristen Cannon tied the game on a free position goal with 17:34 to play and then assisted on freshman CeCe Finney's game-winner just over three minutes later. From about 15 yards out, Cannon found Finney cutting across the fan with a nice pass. Finney took the pass and blew a shot inside the left post at the 14:18-mark.

Freshman Emily Kenul gave the Blue Jays a two-goal cushion with 10:01 to play, adding a goal to her two assists. In the high left alley, junior Dene' DiMartino slipped the ball to Kenul in the slot, and she fired a sidearm shot past Kaitlyn Leahy to make it a 7-5 game. Hopkins won the ensuing draw, but turned it over with 8:39 to play. Stony Brook cleared and Courtney Murphy tried a shot from close range but missed wide with 7:10 on the clock. Senior goalie KC Emerson was closest to the ball; the Blue Jays cleared and were able to run out the remainder of the game.

Hopkins jumped out to a two-goal lead with back-to-back goals just 25 seconds apart. Senior Jen Cook opened the scoring at the 26:26-mark, taking a pass from Kenul and bouncing a shot past Leahy on the doorstep. DiMartino then doubled the Blue Jays' lead on a free position goal. Kylie Ohlmiller pulled Stony Brook within one with 24:06 to go, scooping up a ground ball off an Emerson free position save and scoring on a behind the back shot from in tight. Just over two minutes later, Taylor Ranftle tied the game on a free position goal.

Befitting a game with two of the top defenses in the nation, the pace slowed from there. It was nearly 20 minutes before the stalemate was broken. Sophomore Haley Schweizer did the honors with 2:25 to play as she took a pass from Kenul and scored on a rocket of a shot from the top of the arc. Just 48 seconds later, Murphy grabbed a loose ball and went high to low to beat Emerson to tie the game at 3-3.

Hopkins didn't need long to retake the lead as DiMartino scored just 16 seconds into the second. DiMartino picked the upper left corner of the cage off a face dodge to put the Jays up 4-3. Murphy answered again for the Seawolves with 24:32 to play, putting a shot inside the right post off a dump pass from Dorrien Van Dyke. Van Dyke then converted a free position shot with 21:54 to put Stony Brook up 5-4.

DiMartino (2g, 1a) and Kenul (1g, 2a) paced the Blue Jays in their eighth win over a top-10 team since 2011. Cannon also had a multi-point day (1g, 1a) while DiMartino and junior Josie George each controlled two draws. Emerson finished with four saves in earning the win. Murphy (2g) and Van Dyke (1g, 1a) led the Seawolves, who were held scoreless for stretches of 20:35 and 21:54.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 11 as the Blue Jays travel to Lewisburg, PA to take on the Bucknell Bison. Opening draw at Graham Field is slated for 1:00 pm.
