ALLENTOWN, PA - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday, defeating host Muhlenberg before dropping a five-set battle against Stockton. JHU is now 6-8 this season, and improved to 2-0 in Centennial Conference play with the win over the Mules.
Against Muhlenberg:
- JHU took the opening set 25-22. With the set tied at seven, Hopkins rattled off five straight points to take a 12-7 advantage. The Mules rallied to tie the set at 21, but the Blue Jays were able to score four of the last five points and clinched the set on a kill by Elizabeth Wuerstle.
- The second set was close throughout. With Muhlenberg leading 24-22, Hopkins scored the last four points and won the set on a service ace from Ali Cox.
- Hopkins led 14-12 in the third set but the Mules rallied to win it 25-23 with the final point coming on a JHU service error.
- JHU took the fourth set 25-22 to clinch the match 3-1. The Blue Jays broke a 19-19 tie with four straight points and held on, clinching the set and match on a kill from Ally Hirsch.
Against Stockton:
- The Blue Jays dominated the first set 25-13 to take a 1-0 advantage against the Ospreys.
- Stockton fought back to win the second set 25-20 and tie the match at one apiece.
- JHU took a 2-1 lead with a 25-23 third-set victory.
- In the fourth set, the Ospreys tied the match at two apiece with a 25-21 win.
- Stockton won the decisive fifth set 15-11. The Ospreys went up 10-1, before JHU rallied to close within four.
Inside the Box Score:
- Cox, Wuerstle and Erica Johnston all tallied double-digit kills vs. Muhlenberg.
- Kristi Rhead (26) and Carolyn Zin (22) combined for 48 assists in the win against the Mules.
- The Blue Jays had 14 service aces against Muhlenberg, while the Mules had just one.
- Stephanie Yokoyama collected 20 digs vs. Stockton.
- Cox and Johnston each tallied 16 kills against the Ospreys.
- Zin led the way vs. Stockton with 35 assists.
