Hopkins Beats Salisbury in Five-Set Battle

SALISBURY, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team picked up its second victory of the season Monday in a five-set thriller against Salisbury (2-4). The Blue Jays defeated the host Sea Gulls 26-24, 22-25, 25-19, 22-25, 16-14 to improve to 2-3 on the season.

How it Happened:

• In the first set Hopkins jumped out to leads of 10-6 and 19-15, but Salisbury was able to fight back each time. With the score knotted at 24 apiece, the Blue Jays took the last two points via an Elizabeth Wuerstle kill followed by an attack error from the Sea Gulls.
• Salisbury took an early lead in the second set and led by seven points at one point. Hopkins closed to within 24-22 before a kill from Jordan Lawson clinched the set for Salisbury and tied the match 1-1.
• With the third set tied 17-17, Hopkins scored eight of the final ten points to win the set and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
• Salisbury used a run in the middle of the set to grab the lead and was able to hold on to win the set 25-22 and force a winner-takes-all fifth set.
• In the fifth set, Salisbury broke a 6-6 tie with four consecutive points, but the Blue Jays showed resiliency. JHU battled back to tie the set at 12 apiece and eventually got a kill from Michelle Abt to clinch the set 16-14.

Who Led the Way:
• Ali Cox led Hopkins with 18 kills on the afternoon.
• Abt had the best match of her young career Monday. The freshman finished the contest with 16 kills, 10 digs and three service aces.
• Carolyn Zin finished with a career-best 42 assists to go along with 10 digs.

Inside the Box Score:
• Hopkins outhit the Sea Gulls .203-.180.
• The Blue Jays tallied 15 service aces while Salisbury totaled 12.
•JHU doubled Salisbury in total blocks, 10-5.

Who's up Next: The Blue Jays travel to Atlanta this weekend for the Emory Classic. JHU will play Birmingham Southern and host Emory on Friday, before wrapping up play on Saturday against Covenant and Piedmont.
