Junior Ryan Curran hit two late threes to pull away from the Garnet.

BALTIMORE, MD – Senior Gene Williams and junior Ryan Curran combined for 35 points to lead the Johns Hopkins men's basketball team to a 60-49 win over visiting Swarthmore Tuesday night. The Blue Jays win their third straight as they improve to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the Centennial Conference. The Garnet drop their second straight and slip to 10-3 on the season and 4-2 in the conference.

This one was back and forth from the beginning as there were nine lead changes and three ties in the game's opening 15 minutes. Neither team led by more than three during that span as the teams traded baskets. Matt Brennan tied the game for the third time with a three-pointer at 5:41 in the first half. Christian Rhodes then drove the paint and kissed two points off the glass to give Swarthmore a 19-17 lead with 5:05 to go.

After taking a timeout, Williams swung the lead back in Hopkins' favor with a bucket from downtown. That sparked a 10-0 run that saw the Blue Jays push out to a 27-19 lead in a three-minute span. Williams and sophomore Jesse Flannery did much of the damage, combining for three three-pointers. Brennan ended the Blue Jays' run with a three of his own, his fourth of the half, at the 1:02-mark to make it a 27-22 game and that's how the half would end.

Coming out of the half, Hopkins quickly pushed its lead to 11 with six unanswered points, going up 33-22 with less than two minutes gone in the half. But Swarthmore came right back and pulled within two on a Chris Bourne layup with 10:52 to play, making it a 39-37 game. The Garnet spread the love as six different players scored during the 15-6 run. The teams traded buckets and then back-to-back jumpers by Williams put Hopkins up 45-39.

One free throw apiece from Zack Yonda and Robbie Walsh were answered by one from Gordon and Hopkins led 46-41 with just over five minutes to play. Henry Cousineau pulled the Garnet within three with a bucket in the paint. Curran answered however with back-to-back threes from the top of the arc and just like that the lead was nine with 2:55 to go.

Brennan and Walsh sandwiched buckets around a free throw from Gordon and it was a six-point game with 1:58 on the clock. The Garnet then begin to foul and the Blue Jays went seven of eight from the line in the final 90 seconds to secure the win.

Williams scored a game-high 18 points and handed out four assists, while Curran finished with 17 points, seven boards and four steals. For the Garnet, Brennan led the way with 16 points, 12 of those coming in the first half. Bourne also finished in double figures with 10 points, while Walsh just missed a double double with nine points and nine boards. Hopkins held Swarthmore to more than 23 points below its season average.

Hopkins returns to action on Thursday as the Blue Jays travel to Lancaster, PA to take on the 17th-ranked Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm at the Mayser Center.
