BALTIMORE, MD -Beatriz Williams and Sophia Way led a balanced scoring attack as the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team raced past Washington College, 64-42, Wednesday night in Goldfarb Gymnasium. Hopkins improved to 7-9 overall and evened its Centennial Conference record at 5-5 with the victory while Washington fell to 3-13 overall and remains winless at 0-10 in the conference.
Williams continued her impressive senior campaign with a 13-point, 11-rebound performance for her third double-double of the season. The Armonk, NY native nailed three three-pointers and successfully drained all four of her free throw attempts to lead all scorers in the contest. Way tallied 11 points, also connecting on three triples to go along with a pair of foul shots.
Hopkins set the tone early, ending the first quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 19-8 after the first 10 minutes of play. The Shorewomen looked poised to make a run late in the second quarter, but back-to-back three-pointers from Lillian Scott and Way ended any doubt for the Blue Jays and gave them a 34-20 lead at halftime.
JHU maintained its double-digit lead throughout the second half, leading by as many as 23 at one point. Ten different Jays scored in the win including Liz Tommasi with nine and Scott, who added eight.
The Blue Jays shot 44.4% (8-18) from three-point range in the contest, while the Shorewomen shot just 20.0% (5-20) from beyond the arc. Another key factor in the game came on the boards as JHU out-rebounded WC 53-36, including 17-8 on the offensive glass.
Hopkins will look to make it five wins in six chances Saturday when it heads to Swarthmore, PA to take on the Garnet. The Jays are looking to sweep the season series against Swarthmore and improve their CC record above .500 for the first time since winning their conference opener in late November. Tipoff is slated for 1:00pm in Tarble Pavilion.
